Due to the tremendous popularity of Rap and Spoken Word Poetry, Dr. Bridges has researched and traced its origins to the ancient traditions of west African kingdoms. He then brings these traditions to plantations in North America, South America, and
the Caribbean. Finally, the lecture ends with a series of spoken word poems known as “toasts” which Dr. Bridges performs from memory. The lecture becomes very entertaining as well as educational.
