AFRICAN CONTRIBUTIONS TO (STEM) SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS

Dr. Bridges inspires African American students to pursue careers in STEM.

In this seminar/lecture he delves into the African origins of STEM and proves

clearly that African American college students are not strangers to these fields.

Building upon these African roots, he traces the growth of STEM to modern day contributions of African Americans.

THE AFRICAN ORAL TRADITION AND THE ORIGINS OF RAP MUSIC

Due to the tremendous popularity of Rap and Spoken Word Poetry, Dr. Bridges has researched and traced its origins to the ancient traditions of west African kingdoms. He then brings these traditions to plantations in North America, South America, and

the Caribbean. Finally, the lecture ends with a series of spoken word poems known

as “toasts” which Dr. Bridges performs from memory. The lecture becomes very

  entertaining as well as educational.

DIVERSITY ACROSS THE CURRICULUM

Due to teacher and textbook bias, this seminar explores techniques and strategies to aid the inclusivity of people of color, LBGTQ communities and other immigrants. Ideas are based upon teacher-practices of faculty across the country and on the

current sociological research. The intent of this seminar is to help faculty work with the broad range of students enrolled on campus.
